“You’re an idiot,” Gabby said, her heels clicking backwards.
“I’m resourceful,” Kara said, loosening her grip on me.
“A resourceful idiot.” Her foot stomped, cracking the anger, exposing its raw, edgy poison.
“Admit it,” Kara said, “You don’t always have what it takes to get the job done.”
“You fucked the organizer of Langden Ridge Concert Series. That’s just plain sleazy.” Alarm bells rang, red lights flashed. Langden Ridge Concert Series was a popular outdoor concert venue that a racted hundreds of people on any given night. Jim Perry, married with four children, was the organizer. Pin pricks darted every square inch of my skin, stabbing me, gutting me alive.
“I didn’t fuck him. I made out with him.
Gigantic difference there, sis.” She turned to me. “By the way, it was such a gross kiss. He smelled like a pastrami sandwich that had baked in the sun too long.”
I nodded, grateful for this tidbit.
“You made out with him, he promised you stage time, you le him standing by the Carousel stage time, you le him standing by the Carousel with blue balls and one hell of a fantasy to get off on, probably in the outhouse a few hundred feet away.” Kara turned me to her. “Gabby’s just jealous because she’s been trying to get this guy to agree to let us play and I got the yes first.” Gabby stormed up to our faces, pointed her finger at Kara. “I’m the manager. That’s the deal. I get the gigs. You perform. You disagree, I walk.” I saw our future slipping, being pulled overboard, sinking to a place too deep to rescue. I braced, determined to rein it in, tie it into an unflappable knot. Then, swooping in with her beautiful, delicate voice, Kara saved the day. “We agree, okay?” She parried her finger away.
Gabby lowered her stance, backed away, dropped her arms down to her side. “Good. I’m glad we’re clear.” She spun and stomped to the door.
“And just so there’s no confusion, we’re canceling that gig because that’s not how we operate.” And with that she slammed the door.
I exhaled.
Kara hopped on her stool, looped her head through the guitar strap and started strumming, a sly through the guitar strap and started strumming, a sly smile resting on her face. “We’re not canceling that gig.”
“We’re not?”
She extended her hand. “Hell no, sweetie.” She reached out for me, pulling me in close. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”
“You don’t think she’ll find out?”
“No,” she said with clandestine mischief wri en all over her, shining like a diamond on her lips. “It’ll be our little secret.”
“But, what if she does find out?” I asked.
Her arm cradled the guitar. She leaned over, exposing her taut, golden skin, skin I was privy to viewing, touching. “You are so adorable when you get nervous.”
I couldn’t resist. I leaned into her kiss, ready to prove I was up for anything. Hell I’d play topless if that’s what she wanted. This was Kara Travers. The one, the only, the master of ge ing what she wanted.
